Memorial Day: Looking Out For Those Who Looked Out For Us
Memorial Day weekend is approaching and it’s the perfect opportunity to salute those fearless men and women that looked out for us!
We had the honor of meeting some of these brave individuals back in October 2015, when ATRS acquired an existing Clothing & Shoe collection facility in Indianapolis and began our charitable partnership with DAV Indiana.
Disabled American Veterans (DAV) is a national nonprofit that helps more than 1 million veterans in positive, life-changing ways each year. The organization provides more than 700,000 rides for veterans attending medical appointments and assists veterans with more than 300,000 benefit claims annually. In 2015, DAV provided representation for more than 300,000 claims for veterans and their families, obtaining for them more than $4 billion in new and retroactive benefits.
Today, our Clothing & Shoe Donation partnership provides Indiana residents an easy & convenient drop-off solution for gently used, out of season, unwanted clothing & shoes. Every pound of donations we receive generates much needed monthly funding for DAV Indiana to support disabled veterans. Through a network of much needed programs & services, DAV empowers veterans to lead high-quality lives with respect and dignity. What an amazing mission!
The Mobile Service Officers (MSO) Program continuously seeks new locales to bring DAV service to veterans and dependents in their own communities. Through the MSO Program, DAV assists veterans who might not be able to visit a Service Office due to distance, transportation, health or other reasons. With over 10 specially equipped mobile offices visiting communities across the country, this outreach program fills the void for veterans who may not otherwise have the opportunity to seek assistance. In 2015, MSO’s traveled 104,662 miles to 879 cities and towns.
DAV’s Transportation Network is one of the country’s largest voluntary transportation programs. This unique program provides vehicles and volunteers throughout the country to transport veterans to and from their medical appointments. To put this into perspective, DAV volunteer drivers have tracked over 640,000,000 miles since the program’s beginning. In 2015, volunteers traveled 24,727,577 miles, providing 711,688 rides to veterans and donating 1,648,947 hours of their time. That’s impressive!
These are just a few of the reasons ATRS is proud to support DAV and improve the lives of veterans in the Indiana market. Want to help? All it takes is cleaning out your closet and decluttering to look out for those who have looked out for you.
