This Father’s Day, Celebrate Dad & the Planet
Father’s Day is nearing and it’s a great time to nail down a few more ways to celebrate the men in our lives while showing love for our environment. Here are some ideas to demonstrate how you care about your Dad and the world he helped bring you into!
Hit a local trail or park. What better way to fit in some father bonding time than in the great outdoors? Find a nearby trail to hike, bike or take a run. Visit a national park, or make it a new tradition to plant a Father’s Day tree!
Go green, on the green. Recycled tees and eco golf balls make perfect gifts for golf-enthusiast dads. Hit a few rounds at the driving range or spend a day out on the course. Regardless, you & Dad will lessen your carbon footprint.
Is dad a fisherman? Encourage your dad, uncles and grandfathers alike to use a vintage fishing pole rather than a brand new model. Better yet, do the research for them and scout out some great finds on Craigslist or eBay. Then, take him out to enjoy some deep Dad’s Day discussion while you’re reeling in a big catch.
Give the gift of solar. For gadget loving dads, hand-cranked or solar powered chargers are perfect for loading up smartphones, mp3 players and laptops on the go – or on the next family camping trip!
Green dad’s gym routine. If physical fitness is on your dad’s to-do list, dress him with some fresh eco-friendly workout threads or a reusable water bottle to keep him moving and hydrated. Get him pumped up for more green workouts by taking it outside. Pro tip: After putting in all of that extra work your new shoes are bound to lose their bounce. Donate them into your nearest ATRS donation bin!
Fire up the Father’s Day eco-feast. Father’s Day and grilling a great meal go hand in hand – so hit up your local farmers market for some local, organic produce and meats to get cooking! Consider using a propane gas grill to reduce your carbon footprint by at least half of a charcoal grill. However, if you live only the charcoal lifestyle, use environmentally friendly coconut shell charcoal as a sustainable alternative.
Help dad ditch the disposables. Despite the electricity needed to power them, electric razors are a greener choice than disposable ones – and a solar charged razor is even better! Look for a trusted brand when shopping for a new razor, since lasting power is key.
Share an eco-brew. Nothing beats sharing a cold one with dad on his special day. Drink green by drinking local. Enjoy a beer made locally, or go a step further and visit a local brewery for a refreshing beverage this Sunday!
What else can you do with dad that’s green? Create a bonding experience by cleaning around the house for things you no longer need, want or wear. Make it a #GreenSummer by donating your gently used clothing & shoes with ATRS. Call our 24 Hr Hotline at (866) 900-9308 to find a bin nearest to you.
